The Stages of Kratom Addiction — And When to Get Help

If you've started questioning your use of kratom, that's worth paying attention to. Kratom is often marketed as a natural supplement, but it can act like an opioid in the body — especially at higher doses — and can lead to dependence over time. Because it's legal in many places and easy to access, kratom use can quietly become part of your daily routine.

At Reform Recovery Center in Los Angeles, our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) helps individuals take an honest look at their substance use and begin building a healthier, more stable life. One of the core principles we emphasize is that recovery begins with honesty.

Stage 1: Occasional or 'supplement' use

At first, kratom may feel helpful — used for energy, mood, or mild pain relief, and seen as a safer or more natural alternative. At this stage it may not feel like a problem.

Stage 2: Increased use and dependence

Over time your body may rely on it: using daily or multiple times a day, needing higher doses, relying on it for energy or relaxation, and thinking about it throughout the day. It can create both mental and physical dependence.

Stage 3: Loss of control

Taking more than intended, difficulty cutting back, feeling irritable or anxious without it, and using to avoid withdrawal — restlessness, mood swings, fatigue, and physical discomfort.

Stage 4: Life begins to be affected

Low motivation or emotional instability, difficulty functioning without kratom, strained relationships or isolation, and continued use despite consequences.

When it's time to seek treatment

If kratom is affecting your mood, energy, relationships, or daily functioning, it may be time to get help. Our IOP focuses on what happens after the substance is reduced or removed — rebuilding stability, coping skills, and a life that doesn't depend on substances.
