What We Treat
Benzodiazepine Addiction & Safe Withdrawal
Published Jan 21, 2026 · Updated Jul 8, 2026
Benzodiazepines — Xanax, Valium, Klonopin, Ativan — are prescribed for anxiety and sleep, but they can create physical dependence quickly. Coming off them requires medical care, because unsupervised withdrawal can be dangerous.
Signs of dependence
- Needing higher doses for the same effect
- Using more than prescribed or without a prescription
- Anxiety, insomnia, or panic between doses
- Being unable to stop despite wanting to
Why withdrawal is risky
Like alcohol, abrupt benzodiazepine withdrawal can cause seizures and other serious complications. This is not a substance to quit "cold turkey" alone. Safe recovery uses a gradual, medically supervised taper.
How treatment works
Medical detox carefully reduces the dose over time to keep you safe and comfortable, while therapy addresses the underlying anxiety or trauma that often drives use. Learning non-drug ways to manage anxiety is central to lasting recovery.
