What Is a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)?

A Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is the most intensive form of outpatient care — full days of treatment while you return home or to sober living each evening.

What PHP involves

PHP typically runs about five to six hours a day, five days a week. It blends individual therapy, group therapy, psychiatric support, life-skills work, and recovery education — nearly the intensity of residential care, with more independence.

Who it's for

PHP fits people stepping down from residential or detox, and those who need serious structure but have a safe, stable place to sleep. It's also ideal when you need close monitoring for co-occurring mental health conditions.

How long it lasts

Most people spend a few weeks in PHP before stepping down to IOP. The goal is to stabilize, build tools, and gradually reintroduce daily responsibilities as you grow stronger.
